My name is Abigail
and I am a 18 year old student from Singapore.
Designing and
constructing buildings have always been a dream since young and I always wanted
to do something that combines both arts and science. Architecture was the first
thought in my mind. It requires me to challenge my creativity and a lot of
hands-on approach which I find more comfortable with.
I would like to
study at Manchester School of Architecture because of it has the necessary
resources and guidance to enable me to gain the knowledge and skills to become
an architect in the future. The school focuses solely on Architecture unlike
other universities and it is known as one of the more prestigious architectural
schools in UK. They have professionals from MARC that would be able to tell
students more from experiences in research. Furthermore, it provides many
opportunities and programmes that requires students to tackle real world
problems. This is important as it would enable us to contribute effectively and
make a positive difference to society in the future. As an international
student, Manchester has rich architecture heritage and excellent study
environment to enhance my learning. I feel that Manchester School of Architecture
is the place that will allow me to grow in passion and interest in
Architecture.
The building that
has led me to spark a bigger interest in Architecture was actually my own
house. It is not exactly a typical house in Singapore but the house is actually
mainly focused on an open-space concept to maximise the potential of space
used. The house was made from scratch and I was able to see the whole process
of the construction of my own house. I am very amazed of how it turned out so
much bigger looking as compared to the initial house that was removed. Also, it
enabled us to call it a home despite it looking more modern and different from
other houses.

One of my
favourite architectural “marvel” is actually the Burj Al Arab. It is a luxury
hotel in Dubai and it is the fourth tallest hotel in the world. The architect
behind it was Tom Wright – a British
architect. It is truly an ambitious work to build such a costly and different
building on an artificial island; something that requires a lot of cost,
manpower and a huge leap of faith. What I like about is how it is both
beautiful both in exterior and interior. They even have a large aquarium in the
dining area and panoramic elevator. It would be a dream to ever stay in this
hotel and I would very much like to visit both country and hotel.
